Three years into my gut healing journey to heal leaky gut and I’d already done a heck of a lot of research already into the causes and triggers for this devastating condition. I was well aware of my exposures to toxic entities and I’d already overhauled a lot in my home, not just diet, but personal and household care too. I’d even thrown out a lot of my pre-loved plastics like food containers and bottles because I’d read a lot of research on how chemicals in plastic affect the gut.
Then I slowly started to allow “BPA-free” products to sneak back into my house thinking that since they had this toxic chemical removed they couldn’t possibly be harmful anymore. That is until I realised that they now replace BPA with its evil twin BSA……are you confused?? I was….let me explain.
BPA – known as Bisphenol A is chemical used in the lining of some food and beverage packaging to protect food from contamination and extend shelf. It is present in all things plastic; think plastic bottles, plastic utensils, credit card receipts, lids, plastic bags, plastic food containers, plastic baby bottles and it’s even sprayed in tin cans.
It is an endocrine disruptor meaning it is a compound that can bind to hormones receptors and evidence shows that it can make females and males have abnormal hormone development. In a women it mimics estrogen making the body think it has a whole lot more estrogen than it really does and is believed to be a major contributor in serious conditions like breast cancer.
More than 130 studies have linked the hormone-mimicking chemical to a wide variety of health problems, including cancers and birth and reproductive defects. They’ve also found that the permeability of intestinal cells in both humans and rats decreased upon exposure to the chemical otherwise known as…you’ve guessed it…”Leaky Gut Syndrome”.
Not only that but studies showed that once exposed to this compound, besides its endocrine disruptive effect, it can bind to protein in the body and then create a new trigger for autoimmunity. With autoimmune conditions on the rise, this is a serious concern and should be addressed!
The FDA banned the use of BPA in bottles for infants in 2012, following similar bans in Canada and Europe yet somehow here in Australia its still being used or being replaced with “BPA-free” bottles which now actually use BSA (Bisphenol S) which is more toxic and more inflammatory to the body…..what the?!
So what can you do to completely get these toxic substances out of your life??
Here’s my tips:
- Don’t leave plastic water bottles in a hot car. Heat causes BPA/BSA to leak out and releases BPA/BSA back into the liquid….heck better still DON’T buy plastic bottles.
- Don’t drink hot drinks like coffee through plastic lids.
- Don’t drink soft drinks in plastic bottles – acidic drinks also cause the chemical to leak out.
- Don’t use plastic food containers and DEFINITELY don’t heat food in a microwave in plastic containers.
- Don’t use cheap non-stick fry pans and saucepans.
- Avoid plastic food wrap.
- DO use stainless steel or glass bottles.
- DO use glass food containers.
- DO use cast iron pots or stainless steel fry pans and saucepans.
So if you’re looking to find ways to improve your gut health and reduce your risks of hormone imbalances and other diseases, getting plastic out of your life is a great first step in the right direction.
