So if you had a chance to read my story you’ll realise I literally went round and round in circles trying to find answers to my health issues, I tried everything…..or so I thought.
At no point did anyone ever say anything to me about the gut connection or ask me questions about the health of my gut and to be honest I didn’t know anything about the gut back in 2012 either so why would I ask?
Research over the past two decades is revealing that gut health is critical to overall health and that an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases and sickness. In fact, many researchers now believe that restoring gut health will become one of the most important aspects in the pursuit of true health and wellness in generations to come.
So….why is this not spoken about more? Why doesn’t your conventional doctor ask you questions about your gut when you’re going in about another health complaint? How is it that we’ve only recently started to understand the extent of the purpose of gut bacteria? This, my dear friend…..is the ultimate question! But I won’t go into all that now….you’ll have to stick around to hear more.
Essentially our gut is a haven for 100 trillion microorganisms and we have 10 times more bacteria than we have cells in our entire body…..we’re pretty much a walking talking bacteria….that’s crazy! And here we are using antiseptic hand washes to try and “kill off” the bad bacteria….mmm!?!? WE ARE BACTERIA!
So what do these super bugs do for us and why are they so important?
Well, our gut bacteria promotes normal gastrointestinal function…..basically it’s responsible for helping us consume and digest our food, absorb nutrients and expel waste. It provides protection from infection, regulates metabolism, prevents foreign substances from entering the bloodstream and not only that but around 75% of our immune system is there too. So you could say it’s pretty damn important right!?
So….if we know that 75% of our immune system is in our gut and we have a health issue directly related to the immune system…why on earth wouldn’t we look at what our gut is (or in this case isn’t) doing and get to the root cause?
That was essentially the turning point for me….once I linked the gut I could clearly see factors and lifestyle choices that had affected my gut and had essentially led me to become a haven for bad bacteria, leaky gut (we’ll go into that one later) and malabsorption. I started looking at what I was putting into and on my body and all the other lifestyle and environmental factors that was effecting my gut and I was able to map out an intricately unique path to wellness built purposely around the needs of my own body.
